Root canal treatment (endodontics)

If the damage to the tooth due to dental caries is extensive and the caries penetrates to the internal structure of the tooth, inflammation will occur. Inflammation of the dental canal is very painful and causes great difficulties for the patient. In this case, the dental canals need to be opened, cleaned and filled.

How does this procedure work?

Root canal treatment should be (if done correctly) completely painless. Therefore, the first thing on the list is correctly performed local anaesthesia.

Subsequently, we isolate the affected tooth from the surrounding area with a rubber membrane - the so-called cofferdam. The cofferdam protects the patient from the instruments/dental tissue getting stuck in the neck and at the same time keeps the operating field dry.

The dentist dissects all the decayed tissues from the tooth and the most detailed work follows - finding all the canals. The entire tooth needs to be examined perfectly, which is why it is advantageous to use magnifying glasses or a microscope. That way we won't miss any detail.

The canals are then precisely cleaned and widened with root instruments, which allows us to rinse the canals with disinfection afterwards. Finally, all canals must be closed - filled. Today, so-called gutta-percha is popularly used.

The last step is the build up of the tooth (replacement of dissected tissues) with a composite (white) filling. It is interesting to note that amalgam should not be used for tooth extensions after endodontic treatment, as there is a risk that a tooth weakened in this way will crack.

Endodontic treatment is very demanding. The experience and skill of the dentist comes first. The treatment can sometimes be very long (e.g. up to 3 hours). In addition to skill, a perfect knowledge of dental anatomy and modern procedures are also important.

The treatment of dental canals is therefore a time- and physically demanding procedure, the price of which should correspond to these facts. From the simplest to the most complex cases, you need to prepare for a price starting at 4,000 crowns.
